Atlantis in Florida (research by Dennis Brooks)

About Dennis Brooks -
[dennisbrookscontact@gmail.com] [808-382-0304]

Dennis Brooks was a senior instructor and curriculum developer for the U.S. Army. After retiring, he started working as an assistant teacher. After a while, he was put in charge of a third-grade reading program. The workbooks used for teaching reading at the time, taught reading with phonics using diacritical marks, which were confusing for both the teachers and students. Also, the students had to refer to a dictionary or pronunciation key in the back of the book. Then they would match the sounds to the symbols in the words before they could sound them out. This was a slow learning process but it worked for the majority of the students. After working with the students for a while, Dennis started developing a new reading program called Fonikz, which does not use the diacritical marks found in the dictionary. His current vocation is as an instructor for "Catch Up With Reading School" [www.catchupwithreading.com]

"Atlantis Island Found in Tampa Bay"
Posted 2004-12-08 to "PRNewswire" [http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/atlantis-island-found-in-tampa-bay-75750932.html]:
TAMPA, Fla. --
After twenty years of searching,  Dennis Brooks has found the island of Atlantis.  When Plato wrote about  Atlantis, he gave detailed measurements of its terrain and waterways.  He said  that the distance across the center of the triangular Island (Atlantis), was  .5 miles, and it was surrounded by three zones of water and two zones of land.
He gave exact measurements of the zones.  The first land zone was a  peninsula extending from the mainland, and the second land zone was another  island.  He stated that the water zones were canals cut straight alongside the  island, and the first two canals separated the island from the peninsula and  mainland.  The third water zone was cut through the peninsula to form the  second and outer land zone, which was also a triangular shaped island.
Plato went on to give exact measurements of the land masses and waterways.  He said that each of the two land zones (peninsula and island) were 1800 feet  across.  And that one of the water zones was 300 feet across; and the other  two were 600 feet across.
According to Plato, this small island of Atlantis held the royal palace  and was located across the canal from the main city of Atlantis, which is now  Tampa, FL.  Plato also gave detailed descriptions of docks, bridges, and  aqueducts that connected the land zones.  He wrote of beautiful gardens,  orchards, and two springs that provided hot and cold water.
Harbor Island, (in Tampa Bay) is elegant, and fits Plato's description  perfectly.  It is a beautiful triangular shaped, semiprivate island that has a  distance across its center of .5 miles.  It is surrounded by three zones of  water and two zones of land.  One of the land zones is a triangular shaped  island and the other is a peninsula that extends out into the bay from the  mainland.  Each of the land zones is 1800 feet across.  One of the three  canals is 300 feet across and the other two are 600 feet across.
All of the terrain features and waterways can be found on a topographic map, measured, and verified using Plato's writings and measurements.
There are other indications that the area was once part of Atlantis:  the northern section of Tampa has a place called Temple Terrace; Apollo Beach is in the Bay area, and on the Florida plain, there is a city called Atlantis. There is much more to this story.

"Atlantis on the Florida Plain - Researcher Verifies Findings"
Posted 2004-12-21 to "PRNewswire" [www.prweb.com/releases/2004/12/prweb190966.htm]:
Miami, FL -
Researcher confirms Plato's assertion that the Florida Plain was once part of Atlantis. Plato not only described Harbor island (in Tampa Bay) as Atlantis, but gave detailed descriptions of the Florida plain as part of the country. His writings have been used to verify the findings that were published earlier. Here is Plato's description with explanatory notes in parentheses:
"The whole country was said by him to be very lofty and precipitous on the side of the sea (ocean), but the country immediately about and surrounding the city was a level plain, itself surrounded by mountains (Appalachian) which descended towards the sea; it was smooth and even, and of an oblong shape, extending in one direction three thousand stadia (330 miles), but across the centre inland it was two thousand stadia (110 miles)...and where falling out of the straight line followed the circular ditch (Indian River).

"The depth, and width, and length of this ditch were incredible, and gave the impression that a work of such extent, in addition to so many others, could never have been artificial. Nevertheless I must say what I was told. It was excavated to the depth of a hundred, feet, and its breadth was a stadium (600 ft.) everywhere; it was carried round the whole of the plain, and was ten thousand stadia (1,100 miles) in length. It received the streams which came down from the mountains, and winding round the plain and meeting at the city (Tampa), was there let off into the sea (gulf).
"Further inland, likewise, straight canals of a hundred feet in width were cut from it through the plain, and again let off into the ditch leading to the sea: these canals were at intervals of a hundred stadia, and by them they brought down the wood from the mountains to the city, and conveyed the fruits of the earth in ships, cutting transverse passages from one canal into another, and to the city."
Plato's description of the Atlantis Plain is the same as that of the Florida Plain, which is 110 miles across at its narrowest point. Its length is 330 miles, and the great ditch runs 1,100 miles around the coast to Tampa Bay. The terrain features and waterways can be measured and verified on a topographic map.
Florida also has many archeological sites that can only be explained by the presence of an advanced civilization. There is much more to this story.

"ATLANTIS: TEN TRIBES OF THE AMERICAS"
Fundraising campaign ended 2012-10 [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/689614510/atlantis-ten-tribes-of-the-americas]:
Researcher Dennis Brooks is using Kickstarter to raise money for the self-publishing of his new book, "ATLANTIS: TEN TRIBES OF THE AMERICAS; Was Florida the Great Plain of Atlantis?"
The paperback format will be published in January of 2013 and made available to the general public by the end of February. That is when we will start advertising to launch the book. In the meantime, an early edition paperback and eBooks will be published for Kickstarter supporters. They will be available before Christmas of 2012. Money from pledges and early edition book sales will be used to publish and promote the paperback book.
Dennis has known for years that Florida was special ever since he decoded Plato’s description of the Atlantis plain and matched it with Florida. He didn’t think of Florida as a plain until he saw it on a map: FLORIDA PLAIN. At the time he was searching for the plain of Atlantis. After studying the Florida Plain, he found that it has a river following its coastline. This river is similar to the large ditch that Plato claimed went around the plain of Atlantis.

Myakka -
Dennis couldn’t prove his theory until now. He finally found a large piece of physical evidence that proves without a doubt that the Americas were once the boundless continent that Plato called the Atlantis Kingdom. The evidence is the official state soil of Florida, Myakka. This is a clue to solving one of the worlds most intriguing mysteries of all times: Where is the lost city of Atlantis? Dennis found that the city of Tampa has a triangular island similar to what Plato described as the small island of Atlantis. All of this fits with other evidence making Tampa the once lost city of Atlantis.
The author believed that a super tsunami swept across this smooth plain 11,500 years ago and washed away most of the archeological evidence except for a few hundred ship anchors found scattered around the Tampa Bay Area. He knew that without other physical evidence, it would be impossible to prove his theory. However, when he finally found the following passage in an old book he knew he had the answer:
“To the northeast of this Island Continent [the Americas] is located the Great Temple, built both for use and symbolism. On a plateau [plain] of many acres in extent, where the gradually rising ground began to break into foothills, the whole surface had been leveled and paved with some soft material of which the Atlantians alone knew the secret. This hardened under the action of the sun and atmosphere, until it was like adamant. To the East, a belt of country reaching to the seacoast, but not on a level with it, had also been smoothed and paved, so that there was no obstruction to the eye, until it rested on the far horizon.”
Dennis found that the state of Florida has a unique soil called Myakka that fits the description of the Atlantis pavement.
Then he remembered another passage he had read: “A passage in Sanskrit from the Mahabharata, The Vishnu Purana, one of the oldest of the Hindu Puranas, speaks of "Atala, the White Island," one of the seven dwipas (islands) belonging to Patala. This ancient text locates Atala geographically on the seventh zone, which, according to Francis Wilford (the translator), is 24 to 28 degrees north latitude. Colonel Wilford rightly calls Atala "Atlantis, the White Island." (Wilford, 1808)”
The grid coordinate puts Tampa Bay and its small island on the same latitude as Atlantis. This means that, “White” of the “White Island” is referring to both Florida’s State soil, and Atlantis’ pavement. Myakka covers more than 1,500,000 acres and gets its name from a Native American pronunciation of “Big Waters.” Wilford mistakenly called the white plain of Atlantis a White Island.

Boundless Continent -
Realizing that the ten countries of Atlantis include all of North, South, and Central America helps us make sense of the many strange structures found in the americas. This includes the copper mines of Lake Superior, the broad well-paved roads of South America, the vast cities built of stone that look at a distance like our modern factories. Also, there were splendid palaces and aqueducts, all constructed with grandeur. The roads and paths to the aqueducts, were traveled so much that they wore deep depressions into the hard stone.

About Atlantis : Ten Tribe of the Americas -
The book tells the whole story of Atlantis as it was written by Plato. When Plato published the story over 2,000 years ago, it became an instant hit. Atlantis was the talk of the town. The most educated scholars did research to support Plato. Everybody had an opinion about Atlantis.
When Plato wrote the story, he thought he was recovering a chapter of Greek history. It told of a great battle that took place 9,000 thousand before his time. According to the legend, a coalition of ten countries came across the Atlantic Ocean. They attacked the countries around the Mediterranean Sea in an attempt to conquer the world. Other countries fought along with Athens, but they were defeated. In the end, Athens had to face the enemy alone. Finally, as the battle went on, Athens got the upper hand and drove the Atlantean's back to their ships. While trying to escape the battle, large tidal waves came in and destroyed the ships and the huge Atlantean fighting force. Mythology explained it by saying the God’s destroyed the Atlantean's because the ten kings abused their powers.
Now, let’s look back at how Plato came across the story. He got it from a relative named Critias who told the story from memory. Also, when Plato recorded the story, he was very careful with it because of its historical value. Therefore, he recorded the discussions leading up to the story. Then he took those notes and included them in his dialogue as part of Athen’s battle with Atlantis. Plato called this part of his story a summary, which was about 3,600 Words.
This is what we got from the summary: Plato and Socrates invited five scholars to the Academy as part of an educational seminar. Critias was one of the five. While they were talking, someone told a mythical story about Atlantis. Critias recognized it as a true story and said that he knew it well because he had to memorize it when he was twelve years of age. Also, he said that he still had the manuscript at home. He had gotten it from his great grandfather, named Critias, who had gotten it from a relative, name Solon. Solon went to Egypt and copied it from the walls of the sacred temples. He stayed in Egypt ten years writing his manuscript and learning about the battle with Atlantis. He was going to publish it as an epic story, but because of trouble at home, he didn’t have a chance to finish it. From then on, his manuscript was passed down from relative to relative until it got to Critias.
Since he was telling the story from memory, Critias was afraid that he might make mistakes, so he rehearsed it during the night. The next day he told the story. His audience was Socrates, Plato, his students, teachers, and visitors. Starting with Athens, Critias gave a detailed account of each of the two fighting forces. He told about their government, military, civilians, and how they live. The story about Athens was long, but the story about Atlantis was even longer. So, when you read the book, you will get all the details leading up to Critias telling the story. After recording the story, Plato kept it in his library at the Academy. After a while, the story was published in a dialogue called Timaeus and Critias. That is when the world fell in love with Atlantis. The story was believable and people read and discussed it from every angle.
When the Europeans discovered America, they thought they had found the boundless continent called Atlantis. So, they searched everywhere but found none of the temples or buildings that Critias had described. Soon, the excitement died down and colleges and universities gave up. Without physical evidence, they had no choice but to stop funding the research. They decided that Plato must have made up the story. However, two books on Atlantis became best sellers. They were written by Francis Bacon and Ignatius Donnelly. Since then, over 700 movies, television programs, and books, have been published about Atlantis. Atlantis: Ten Tribes of the Americas tells the larger story as it has grown. It also gives other clues to the lost city, the small island of Atlantis, and it points out other books written before Plato’s time. This proves that Plato didn’t make up the story. Of course, when scholars mention Atlantis, they say that Plato gave a brief mention of it in his Dialogue. Then, they dismiss Atlantis as a myth. That’s all it takes to kill a discussion about Atlantis in academic circles. However, Atlantis is not dead. Not everyone gave up! Many archeologist, scientists, and researchers are still searching for clues to the lost city.
Dennis started doing research on Atlantis while in the army and continued throughout his twenty-year career. After retiring, he finished college with a bachelor’s degree in biology. In the meantime, he worked as a tutor, teaching early reading skills. Using his college research skills, he continued to search for Atlantis. This book is a culmination of his research on Atlantis.

Flooded sites in Florida -
As the water rose on the plain, it captured the landscape and preserved it the way it was thousands of years ago. This allows us to see the layout of the landscape before Columbus arrived and study the ancient ruins from above.
Even today Floridians think that all of these beautiful subdivisions and waterways were built by recent ancestors of present day native Americans.
